eu.bac’s contribution to the “Energy Efficiency for Energy Security Catalogue of Measures”

eu.bac has joined a broad coalition of companies and industry associations contributing their expertise to support the European Commission’s AccelerateEU task to develop a catalogue of replicable measures to produce energy savings and system efficiency gains for the EU Energy Ministers that will gather in Cyprus on 13 May 2026.

The document builds on and updates a European Alliance to Save Energy’s 2022 catalogue of technology and solutions, originally developed in response to the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the context has evolved, the need for coordinated action remains.

This updated catalogue presents cross-sectoral, readily deployable energy efficiency technologies and solutions that can strengthen energy security, alongside industry commitment to support the development of concrete action plans for their large-scale implementation.

The role of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS)

Buildings represent about half of the total energy consumption in the EU, while 75% of the building stock remains inefficient. BACS represent a major opportunity to unlock important energy savings, improve operational performance and maintain comfort and indoor environmental quality (IEQ).

Moreover, BACS are recognised as a ready-to-use solution that is fast to deploy, relatively low disruption, highly scalable and cost-effective. Within the framework of the recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), BACS could lead to savings corresponding to 14% of the total building stock final energy consumption by 2038.

Enhancing energy efficiency with smart building technologies will reduce energy costs for households and businesses, ease peak demand, cut dependence on imported energy, and increase Europe’s resilience in the face of supply shocks.
