eu.bac President at the European Commission’s High-Level Event on AI & Energy

On 19 November 2025, eu.bac was represented by our President, Hans Smid, at the European Commission’s High-level event: Artificial intelligence and energy.

This event, opened by Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, sought to explore the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in the energy sector, as the Commission prepares its strategic roadmap for digitalisation and AI in energy.

As part of the panel discussion, moderated by ENER DG Ditte Juul Jørgensen and CNECT DG Roberto Viola, energy industry leaders gave their insights into the opportunities of AI in energy, as well as the new energy needs for powering AI in Europe.

In his intervention, eu.bac President Hans Smid underlined that, as Europe’s largest distributed energy asset, buildings must be at the centre of a transparent debate on AI’s energy footprint, with all stakeholders at the table. The President also highlighted the role of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) in providing safe and progressive AI integration in buildings, while protecting Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ).
