eu.bac co-signs the Flexible Demand Accelerator Pledge

eu.bac is proud to co-sign the Flexible Demand Accelerator Pledge, a joint industry statement calling for stronger action and collaboration to unlock the full potential of demand-side flexibility across Europe.

Europe’s energy system is undergoing a major transformation to increase resilience, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure affordability for citizens and competitiveness for industry. To achieve these goals, all cost-effective, non-fossil flexibility resources must be deployed — including the activation of flexible demand in buildings, enterprises, industries, and vehicles.

Why Flexible Demand Matters

Flexible demand enables consumers and businesses to adapt their energy use in response to signals from energy markets. This plays a critical role in:

  • Integrating renewable energy more efficiently and reducing costly curtailments.
  • Lowering wholesale electricity prices and reducing the need for fossil-based generation.
  • Supporting system balancing and network efficiency.
  • Helping deliver on the EU’s climate and energy targets, including doubling system flexibility needs by 2030.

The Role of BACS

From our industry perspective, Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) are central to making flexibility a reality. BACS allow building users to:

  • Actively manage and optimise their energy consumption in real time.
  • Respond automatically to market signals without compromising comfort or productivity.
  • Unlock flexibility from heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting systems.
  • Empower occupants and owners alike to become active players in the clean energy transition.

By turning buildings from passive energy consumers into active contributors to flexibility, BACS are key enablers for a digitalised and decarbonised energy system.

The Pledge in Action

The Pledge highlights the need for:

  • Accelerating the implementation of existing EU legislation that already provides a solid framework for demand-side flexibility.
  • Establishing National Tripartite Dialogues on Flexible Demand, bringing together ministries, regulators, system operators, and market participants.
  • Ensuring that all decentralised energy resources (DERs)—from buildings and industries to storage and vehicles—can participate in energy markets.
  • Overcoming barriers to innovative services such as aggregation and energy sharing.
  • Improving data access and interoperability to enable a truly digitalised and flexible energy system.

By co-signing this statement, eu.bac joins other stakeholders in urging both Member States and the European Commission to take bold and coordinated action, ensuring that demand-side flexibility — with BACS at its core — becomes a cornerstone of Europe’s clean and affordable energy future.
